FAQ’s

The Answer to
Common Questions

Why am I suddenly losing my hair ?

This could be a number of reasons such as stress or illness (Covid, RSV,). Usually it is caused by inflammation or high fevers.

How fast will my hair grow back?

Hair growth is a marathon not a race! There are a lot of factors regarding why you are losing your hair. Hair Grows in cycles. On average hair grows in a healthy growth cycle about 1 to 1.5  cm a month or about a half inch.

I see a lot of advertisements for growth serums. Do they work?

It depends on what is in it. Most will not work if you have underlying issues such as autoimmune disorders. Blood work will help determine and reveal why you are losing hair.

Does Rosemary oil work? I see it advertised alot.

The theory about Rosemary Oil is that it will bring blood flow to the follicle. However, the molecule is to large for the Rosemary Oil to get down to the follicle. If you have any type of scalp condition such as Dandruff, psoriasis, or dermatitis, the oil will make it much worse. My suggestion is ‘not to use Rosemary Oil’, because this might also disrupt the PH of the scalp health and that can cause other problems.

Do you take insurance?
NO. Even though Trichology is in the paramedical field, the insurance companies see it as nonessential for health. I strongly disagree because losing ones hair is very depressing and psychologically distressing.
Will I lose my hair if my parents did?
Genetics play a large part. Androgenetic Alopecia the most common and the most controlled, is genetic hair loss caused by DHT (Dihydrotestostrone), a hormone that blocks the receptors to the hair follicle to get the nourishment it is needed to grow the hair. Without proper nourishment the follicle goes dormant and stops being active. This is a slow process that usually takes decades. The sooner you catch this type of hair loss the better because it can be reversed back 3 to 5 years.
What is Alopecia Areata?
Alopecia Areata comes in 3 different types:
  1. The most common one, Patchy Alopecia Areata, are coin size bald patches usually caused from stress such as a wedding, death, taking an important exam, and usually the hair starts growing back in a few months. Sometimes a Dermatologist will give a cortisone shot in the bald area to help with the inflamation.
  2. Alopecia Totalis is when you lose all hair from the neck up … lashes, eyebrows, hair on the scalp. This is caused from an autoimmune response in the body and can come all of a sudden. The hair lose starts in small patches and the patches grow together and eventually lose it all. This Type is rare.
  3. Alopecia Universailis is total loss of hair on the entire body. This is also rare.
Why do I need to get blood work? What does blood work have to do with hair loss?
The blood work is VERY necessary to see what is going on in your body. Your hormone levels such as Vitamin D3 ferritin levels, Iron in the blood, thyroid, blood type, DHT levels etc. will help determine the treatment plan for you. I will give you a written blood work order ‘request’ to give to your doctor. Your Doctor will put in the ‘official’ blood work order and your insurance will take care of the bill.
Is this all confidential?

YES. I abide by HIPPA. I will however get your permission to contact your doctor in some cases to make sure the treatment plan will not interfere with your doctors treatments plan. Example; if you are getting treated for a certain type of cancer, I will reach out to your doctor with the treatment plan for their approval.
